- Material flows are defined as inputs and outputs flowing into and out of an economic system in units of mass.
Input flows: domestic used extraction, imports Output flows: exports, waste flows (to air, to water, landfilling) and diffuse flows (used fertilizers, pesticides, winter gritting) Domestic used extraction is the extracted raw materials and grown biomass that enter the economy for further use in the production process or consumption. Water and air are excluded except for the parts contained in the materials.
